Major engineering work at London Bridge from January 2015 until January 2018

End date
31/01/2018
Route affected
Description

As part of the government-sponsored Thameslink Programme, Network Rail is rebuilding London Bridge mainline rail station to provide more space, improved connections to more destinations and more reliable services. The rail and tube station will remain open during the work.

Until 2018, there will be long and short term changes to train services as major track work takes place around London Bridge station.

Travelling at the weekend

Throughout the programme, different services will be impacted on some weekends and bank holidays, for the latest information visit www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/currentAndFuture

On most weekends, particularly on Sundays, Waterloo East, London Bridge, Charing Cross and / or London Cannon Street stations will be closed or have very limited services. Please use the Journey Planner to see the full impact on your journey.

During periods of time when Charing Cross / Cannon Street are closed, you’ll be able to use your ticket on selective alternative routes to complete your journey at no extra charge. For details full details visit http://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/your-journey/engineering-work/. Please note the ticket acceptance detailed for weekend engineering work may differ from the Monday to Friday Thameslink Programme ticket acceptance outlined below.

Longer term changes

Thameslink services which run through Central London will, from 5 January 2015, not call at London Bridge, however there will be a limited service between London Bridge and Brighton.

Southeastern services to and from London Charing Cross will not call at London Bridge between 12 January 2015 and August 2016. As well as the impact to Southeastern and Thameslink services, Southern and South West Trains passengers will not be able to interchange onto Southeastern Charing Cross services at London Bridge.

For a full list of major service changes visit http://www.thameslinkprogramme.co.uk/key-dates-and-service-changes/

Planning your Journey

For full details of these changes and the impact on your journey, please use the National Rail Enquiries Journey Planner

Alternative routes and travel advice

The impact on your journey will depend on the particular services that you currently use to get to and from London Bridge and what alternatives exist. Travel advice is as follows:

  • Change the train you catch from your home station to go direct to your national rail destination. For example switching from a London Charing Cross service to a London Cannon Street service. This may involve shifting the time that you travel, but in many cases only by a few minutes.
  • If getting a different train from home is not possible, we advise you to change trains en route outside London, for example at Lewisham, Orpington, Sevenoaks or Hither Green, to get to your final destination
  • Look at the other options available at the London end of your journey, for example walking from your final station stop to get where you want to go. It's often quicker to walk between stations in and around London Bridge than many people think. The Thameslink Programme has produced walking maps to help you map out the options for you. You could also consider cycling or using the bus.
If you are unable to complete your journey by interchanging on National Rail services outside London, you may need to use TfL services, if you have a Travelcard you may choose to use other routes.

The accepted routes are:

  • Between London Bridge and Waterloo/Southwark on Jubilee Line and on bus services (services 381 and RV1)
  • Between London Bridge and Charing cross on Jubilee/Bakerloo/Northern Lines and on bus services (services RV1 and 15)
  • Between Cannon Street and Charing Cross/Embankment on District/Circle and on bus services (service 15)
  • Between Elephant and Castle and London Bridge on Northern Line and on bus services (service 35, 40, 133 & 343)
  • Between Blackfriars and London Bridge and on bus services (service 17 (Blackfriars North), 381 & RV1 (Blackfriars South)

Thameslink passengers from the south of London (with a ‘Thameslink only’ ticket), whose final destination is currently London Bridge should change at Elephant and Castle or Blackfriars for onward travel to London Bridge where tickets will be accepted on London Underground or eligible buses between Elephant and Castle and London Bridge and between Blackfriars and London Bridge.

Southern (and any permitted route) passengers who currently interchange onto National Rail services at London Bridge for travel to Charing Cross or Waterloo East should take London Underground or eligible bus services where their tickets will be accepted between London Bridge to Charing Cross or Waterloo/Southwark.

South West Trains passengers who currently interchange at Waterloo East for London Bridge should take London Underground or eligible bus services between London Bridge and London Waterloo / Southwark where their tickets will be accepted.
