Are there luggage restrictions on European trains?

Last updated:2025/09/03

| General Rules (common across most European railways)

  • Number of items: Usually recommended to bring no more than 2 large pieces of luggage + 1 small hand bag. Bringing too many items can make it difficult to move around.
  • Suggested size: Similar to airline checked baggage size (approx. 85 x 55 x 35 cm).
  • Weight limit: No strict rules, but you must be able to lift and place your luggage by yourself.
  • Placement: Luggage can be stored on racks inside the carriage, overhead shelves, or in the space between two seat rows.

| Important Notes

  • Low-cost train operators (e.g. OUIGO, Avlo)

The cheapest fare categories may not include large luggage, allowing only one small hand bag (such as a backpack).

If you need to bring large luggage, you must purchase an add-on. Always check the fare conditions when booking to avoid extra charges or being denied boarding.

  • Night trains (e.g. Nightjet, Intercités de nuit)

Space is limited. It’s best to travel light and bring smaller bags.

  • Self-handling

European train stations usually do not provide luggage check-in or porter services. Choose luggage that is easy to carry or roll by yourself.
