Itinerary

At 07:30 AM, arrive in the morning light at the Trolltunga Active base in Skjeggedal to meet your adventure guide. As you receive the latest trail updates and safety briefings, excitement and anticipation fill the air —gear up, because your long-awaited Norwegian expedition is officially under way!

Shuttle Service

This hike includes a summer shuttle service designed to significantly ease your journey through the steepest section of the trail:

  • June to August (Peak Season):

After gathering at Skjeggedal, a shuttle bus will transport the group to Mågelitopp. This ride saves you from the tough, 4 km steep paved incline right at the start.

  • May & September (Shoulder Season):

Shuttle service to Mågelitopp depends on daily road and weather conditions. If the shuttle is not operating, the hike will start directly on foot from Skjeggedal, increasing the overall distance and physical demand.

Trek & Guided Exploration (Morning to Midday)

Step off from Mågelitopp and forge into the vast alpine plateau and the pristine wilderness of Tyssebotn.

Every step along the path feels like page in nature’s timeless epic. At curated rest spots, your guide will unravel the mysteries of this wild land—from its glacier-carved geology and arctic ecology to ancient valley folklore. Pause to take in the view: the magnificent Folgefonna National Park and its grand glaciers horizon, inviting you to lose yourself in the sheer scale of the untouched wilderness.

The Climax: Trolltunga (Midday to Afternoon)

After hours of pushing your limits, step onto Trolltunga at 1,100 meters above sea level, where an awe-inspiring, ultimate panorama awaits!

Suspended 700 meters above Lake Ringedalsvatnet, the iconic rock edge offers sweeping views of endless fjords and ancient glaciers beneath your feet. Under the watchful eye of your professional guide, you’ll have plenty of time to safely step out onto the edge, capture the photo proof of a lifetime, and enjoy a peaceful lunch along the horizon to recharge your spirits for the epic journey.

The Return Journey (Afternoon)

Refueled and filled with wonder, follow your guide on the trek back toward Mågelitopp.

Upon arrival, your exclusive shuttle awaits to glide you back down to the starting point in Skjeggedal, bringing this ultimate 10-hour, 28 km expedition to a triumphant close. As you return to where it all began, the awe of Norway’s legendary rock will be forever etched into your adventure map.

Kindly Note: We strongly suggest booking accommodation in Odda or near Skjeggedal for the night after your hike. A hot shower, a feast, and a good night's rest will be the perfect reward before you set off on your next journey the following day!

FAQ

Q : When is the best time of year to hike Trolltunga ?

June to September is the best time to visit. During this period, the snow has melted, daylight hours are long, and trail conditions are at their best.

Q : How busy is the Skjeggedal – Trolltunga trail ?

Yes, this route is usually very popular and crowded.

As one of Norway's most iconic landmarks, you can expect many fellow hikers on the trail during peak summer hours, as well as a queue to take photos on the tip of Trolltunga rock.

Q : Is Trolltunga an out-and-back trail? How challenging is the hike ?

Yes, it is an out-and-back trail and is rated as a high-difficulty hike.

The full round-trip covers 26.4 km with a total elevation gain of 1,245 m, taking about 9 to 10 hours to complete. Featuring long steep climbs and rugged terrain, it requires a solid foundation of physical fitness and thorough preparation.

Q : Is the trail rocky ?

Yes, the majority of the trail consists of rocky terrain.

Aside from the paved incline at the trailhead, most of the route across the high alpine plateau is covered in bare granite, loose gravel, and uneven boulder paths. These surfaces can become very slippery when wet. Please wear sturdy, high-top hiking boots with excellent grip and ankle support, watch your footing closely, and use trekking poles for added stability when necessary.

Q : Are there waterfalls along the way ?

Yes! You will enjoy views of the magnificent Tyssestrengene waterfalls and dramatic valley waterscapes.

En route to Trolltunga, you will pass the canyon formed by the Tyssestrengene waterfalls—historically one of Europe's highest twin cascades—which still puts on a powerful display during the early summer snowmelt. Along the way, you can also look down upon the breathtaking vistas of Lake Ringedalsvatnet and surrounding mountain streams.
