FAQs

Can I travel solo, and how is the single price calculated?

Yes. There is only one cabin type, the Standard Room, available for single or double occupancy. Solo travelers get the whole compartment to themselves at the single rate, with no room sharing. With a maximum of around 54 guests sharing meals and excursions, it's an easy, sociable way to travel alone. There are no triple rooms, so families with a child need one double and one single.

What's included, and what will I pay for myself?

Included: two nights in your on-board compartment, daily buffet breakfast, lunches and dinners on board or at selected restaurants (with wine, water, soft drinks and coffee), guided visits and entrance fees, a luxury coach for excursions, a multilingual guide throughout, plus Renfe rail tickets to the start city and back from the end city with Club Lounge access. Not included: tips, drinks outside meals and minibar items, laundry, and international flights.

Who is the Expreso de La Robla suited to? Is it accessible for travelers with limited mobility?

Days combine scenic rail stretches with coach excursions and 1–3 hours of guided walking in historic towns, so the pace suits most travelers. The heritage carriages have narrow corridors and no wheelchair adaptations, and double compartments use upper and lower bunks. Wheelchair users can join only with a companion to assist at all times and their own wheelchair for use off the train. Please talk to us before booking.

What language are the tours in? Does the train run overnight?

A multilingual guide travels with the group, mainly in Spanish and English; there is no Chinese-language guiding, but we provide a Chinese itinerary briefing before departure. The train only runs by day, in stretches of 3–4 hours, and parks at a station each night, so you sleep in a completely still carriage.

Pre-Departure Tips

【Packing List】

  • Comfortable flat walking shoes: daily guided walks cover cobbled old towns, churches and museums.
  • Light jacket and rain shell: northern Spain sees roughly 18–25°C by day in June and September, with cool evenings and frequent showers in the Cantabrian mountains.
  • A warm mid-layer: the Leon–Bilbao route visits the Valporquero Caves, which stay around 7°C and damp.
  • One smart-casual outfit: there's no dress code, but dinners in the dining car or selected restaurants are nicer dressed up a little.
  • A standard-size suitcase plus an overnight bag: compartments are compact, so leave larger luggage at your hotel and bring just two nights' worth.
  • European plug adapter: 230 V, Type F (two round pins).
  • Slippers, earplugs and an eye mask: bunks are snug and stations can be noisy at times.

【Insurance & Documents】

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area. Taiwanese passport holders enter Spain visa-free; check ETIAS travel authorization requirements before you go (implementation date to be confirmed).
  • Travel insurance with overseas medical cover is recommended. The train carries a first-aid kit only, and guests needing care are referred to health centres along the route.
  • The operator's cancellation terms are strict (25% or more within 30 days of departure), so cancellation and travel inconvenience cover is strongly advised.
  • Renfe connecting tickets to the start city and from the end city must be requested within two months of travel. Let us know your travel date and departure city early.
  • Notify us in writing at booking of any dietary needs (vegetarian, allergies, etc.) so meals can be adapted.

【Fitness Preparation】

  • This is a gentle trip, mostly by train and coach, with 1–3 hours of walking per day.
  • In the month before departure, aim for brisk 30–60 minute walks two or three times a week to get used to standing and walking on cobblestones.
  • Double compartments have upper and lower bunks, and the upper bunk requires climbing a ladder. If you have knee problems or need the lower bunk, agree on berths in advance or book a single.

【On the Ground】

  • Pay locally: tips (optional), drinks outside meals and minibar items, and laundry (outsourced, usually back within 24–48 hours and settled at the end of the trip).
  • Check-in: from Bilbao, 14:00 at Bilbao La Concordia station, where luggage is collected; from Leon, 10:00 at Hotel Real Colegiata de San Isidoro.
  • Trip ends around 16:00 in Leon or 14:00 in Bilbao. Allow plenty of time for onward travel and avoid same-day flights.
  • Smoking is prohibited on board, and pets are not allowed (guide dogs excepted).
  • Wi-Fi and a safety deposit box are available on board, though signal can be patchy in the mountains. Keep valuables in the safe.
  • Spain uses the euro. Carry a little cash for small shops and markets.
  • Spanish dinners start late, usually around 21:00, so a light afternoon snack helps.
