Most travelers going from St. Gallen in eastern Switzerland to Lucerne change trains in Zurich. The Voralpen-Express takes a different route: one direct train, about 2 hours 15 minutes, every hour, run by Südostbahn (SOB).
No dragging luggage across platforms at Zurich HB, and you get lakes, viaducts and pre-Alpine countryside along the way. A great pick if you travel with big bags or want your transfer day to feel like part of the trip.
Flying in or out of Munich? Take the direct train from München to St. Gallen, then ride the Voralpen-Express straight into Lucerne.
