In Zermatt, the Matterhorn is the star of the trip. With one Zermatt Mountain Pass, you can ride the mountain railways and cable cars as often as you like during the validity period, and see it from three different heights and angles:
The pass also covers the Täsch–Zermatt shuttle train and Zermatt local buses, so getting between Täsch and town needs no extra ticket. Whether you want Matterhorn views, alpine lakes, mountain trails or a visit to the Glacier Palace, one pass covers it all!

Redeeming your pass and finding your way around the lifts are what worry many travelers before they go. Go By Train has the process ready, so first-time visitors to Zermatt can ride the cable cars and mountain railways with confidence:
Reach the Rothorn in three stages from Zermatt: an underground funicular to Sunnegga (2,288 m), a gondola to Blauherd (2,571 m) and a cable car to the Rothorn (3,103 m). The whole trip takes about 35 minutes and offers some of the best head-on views of the Matterhorn.
Stellisee (2,537 m) is a 20-minute walk from Blauherd and is Zermatt’s most photographed mountain lake. On calm early mornings, the Matterhorn reflects in the water, with two large boulders as a foreground.
Walk from Blauherd down to Sunnegga past Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grünsee, Moosjisee and Leisee. The route is about 9 to 10 km, mostly gentle downhill. If you want something shorter, visit Stellisee and turn back, or leave the trail midway.

Gornergrat sits at 3,089 m and is reached by a cogwheel railway that opened in 1898. The ride from Zermatt takes about 40 minutes, and the top station is the highest open-air railway station in Europe. Surrounded by 29 peaks over 4,000 m and large glaciers, it is a classic spot for Matterhorn views.
Closures: Nov 2 to 14, 2026 and Nov 8 to 19, 2027, with no alternative transport. Please avoid these dates.
Get off at Rotenboden (2,815 m) and walk about 10 minutes to Riffelsee, which reflects the Matterhorn on calm, clear days. To extend the walk, continue about 30 minutes to Riffelberg and take the train back down.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise sits on the Klein Matterhorn at 3,883 m, the end point of the highest cable car in Europe. From Zermatt it takes three cable car stages via Furi and Trockener Steg, about 45 minutes, with scenery changing from forest and rock walls to glaciers.
Trockener Steg (2,939 m) is where hiking trails meet high alpine snow. In summer, the Matterhorn Glacier Trail shows how far the glacier has retreated and leads to Schwarzsee (2,583 m), where a cable car takes you back to Furi.

Passengers holding a mountain excursion voucher issued by Fida (or a Swiss Travel Pass) can ride both the Red Line and Green Line buses for free.

It includes the Gornergrat cogwheel railway, the Rothorn railway and cable cars, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car, the Furi to Schwarzsee and Furi to Riffelberg cable cars, the Randa–Täsch–Zermatt shuttle train and Zermatt local buses, plus free entry to the Glacier Palace.
The Gornergrat railway is closed from Nov 2 to 14, 2026 and from Nov 8 to 19, 2027, and there is no alternative transport to the Gornergrat viewing platform. During these dates, plan your visit to Rothorn or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise instead, and check operating status before you go.
It uses the same number of travel days as the length of the Zermatt Mountain Pass you buy. For example, a 3-day pass uses 3 Swiss Travel Pass travel days, and a 4-day pass uses 4.
Before you buy, check how many travel days you have left on your Swiss Travel Pass, and choose a pass length that matches your stay in Zermatt.
Children under 9 on the travel day travel free when accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket. We recommend carrying their passport in case of ticket checks.
Children aged 9 to under 16 travel free with a Swiss Family Card. Without one, you can buy a child ticket at half the adult price, or buy a CHF 30 Junior Card at an SBB station counter after arriving in Switzerland. See the Terms of Use for details.
You can change your travel date at the local station. Alternatively, ask station staff to note on your voucher that it was not used because of the weather, then apply for a refund from the original seller after you return home.
Redeem your voucher at the Sunnegga–Rothorn valley station or the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise valley station in Zermatt. Bring your passport, and pay a CHF 5 deposit for the card. Return the undamaged card at the base station of Gornergrat, Rothorn or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at the end of your trip to get your deposit back.
